Creative

Head of Creator Relations

Full TimeHybrid
Position:Location:Contract type:Reporting to:Remuneration:
Head of Creator RelationsHybrid, London or New YorkFull TimeLotte Jones, Chief Growth OfficerCompetitive
Who we are
The News Movement is reimagining the news.
Together we are an inclusive movement of creators and communities, inspired by new ways of telling stories that fuel curiosity, creativity and change.
We are driven by our mission  - to empower free society.  We are particularly focused on serving younger audiences between 18 and 30 and believe that factual, unbiased journalism can be told in different and exciting ways via the channels that our audiences already enjoy. We want to explain the world and uncover the stories that matter.
And we want to have fun along the way - by being brave, being kind and being honest. We are growing rapidly, making us one of the fastest growing news companies today.
We are on a journey
TNM has laid the perfect foundation on which to grow both editorially and as a brand .
After 23 weeks in beta and two newsrooms built to serve US and UK audiences through the eyes, ears and brilliant minds of journalists with an average age of 24, we have been able to hone our signature storytelling for a generation built on social media.
Using TNM’s unique style of “Horizontal Storytelling” – friends telling friends” the news rather than “professors telling pupils” – we have developed a  new category of news. Now we have the foundations in place, we need someone special to help us build to the next level. We need someone with editorial savvy, as well as someone comfortable collaborating with the creator community in ways that are imaginative, business savvy and build our brand commercially.  We must also consolidate our reputation as a legitimate player amongst established editorial brands and creative communities.
What we are looking for
While still in beta, and set to launch publicly on 12th October, we have achieved a lot in 26 short weeks! Establishing two newsrooms in both the UK and US, we have a strong bedrock of journalists which we have invested-in and spent time training in the rudiments and rigor of journalism, while allowing breadth for Gen Z to spread their wings and add their own flavor of dynamism and flair.
And while this good work continues under the able stewardship of esteemed journalists, including Kamal Ahmed (previously Editorial Director , BBC in UK) and Jessica Coen (previously Morning Brew + Mashable in US) we realize there is one vital gap in our armoury: a creator community.
We want to build a family of creators that we can call-on throughout the business - be that as ad-hoc contributors editorially; hosts for commercial content; or simply to support sporadic marketing pushes.
This community will be vibrant, varied and born from a deep understanding of our business' direction: the brands we work with; the stories we run and the brand we want to become.
SKILLS
We are agnostic to background - be that in agency, a creator yourself or in-house at a brand. You will, however, have a broad and wide experience working with creators across platforms and genres, to craft campaigns that have driven results - be that followers, engagement, sales or awareness.
TRACK RECORD
We would like you to be responsible for relationships that not only deliver for the business in the short term, but also establish an internal track record which allows you to grow a ‘community’ of creators on our behalf. We would like to explore how we frame this to the outside world, and, as such would like to also see this results-driven record teamed with a creative mind that sees the future potential for powerful relationships.
CREATIVITY
As we know, this sector is shapeshifting all the time. We want to see evidence of how you have professionally grown alongside the creator industry and how you feel it has changed in recent years - the challenges you see ahead and the opportunities you see for a brand like TNM.
NEGOTIATION
Everyone is different. While there are some standards set for creator negotiation, we also appreciate that the art of creator negotiation isn’t linear(!) We would love to see you demonstrate different ways of monetizing our approach and evidence a deep understanding of the different social platforms that allows us to broker using new, fresh methods.
EDITORIAL AND/OR CLIENT LIAISON
As part of this role you will be working with marketing and editorial teams. As such, you will need to balance brand messaging in your creator briefs, as well as supporting editorial desks with ways they could be using creators to amplify their stories. As well as a sensitivity to the differences in what brands and editorial are looking for, we also require this candidate to have a strong record in stakeholder management - be that internal decision-makers; external clients and/or teams with different agendas.
Our culture is vital. We are a team and we work together with a generous spirit of collaboration. Being able to listen to each other and think-through ideas is key. Our audience is at the heart of what we do. We offer an empathetic and supportive environment where every voice matters and we recognise every business needs many different strengths and skills to be successful.

What we are looking for
The News Movement will have its official launch on October 12th in NYC. This public-facing moment will include: a re-worked visual identity; PR; outdoor advertising; online marketing and a launch party.
This brand launch marks a moment of maturation of our business. We are moving from being a vessel for great content, to a brand that needs to stand for something, be something and mean more to our audience than just ‘news’.
As such, we are looking for a Director of Campaigns who can work closely with our CMO to devise campaigns that deploy numerous communications methods to help TNM punctuate modern culture.
 SKILLS
Ideally from a mixed marcomms background, we would like to meet someone who has experience working in creative + consumer comms; corporate storytelling; earned + paid-for; has a strong knowledge of social media and experience working in multidisciplinary teams to delivery long-term integrated campaigns.
CAMPAIGNS
Everyone has a slightly different definition of this word! At TNM we define ‘campaigns’ as:
  • Long term: cultural moments that sustain over time, rather than tactical plays
  • Reputational: campaigns that help TNM display different parts of its brand personality in different places - be that media, amongst influencers or through paid means
  • Integrated: we are looking for someone who doesn’t just stay in their lane and sees the potential for paid-for and earned exploitation when conceiving of ideas.
TEAM PLAYER
We don’t expect you to have all the answers but we do expect you to get your hands dirty. We are a small team and with the help of agency support, we expect someone to be able to go beyond ‘conceptual’ thinking and oversee projects that are deliverable and appropriate for who we are.
CULTURALLY ENGAGED
We sit at the intersection of ‘news’, ‘Gen Z’ and ‘creators’. As such, we need someone who can develop ideas and deliver work that is thoughtful and appealing to an older stakeholder audience as well as Gen Z themselves. This person would ideally have as much experience in corporate worlds as they do consumer/brand worlds - knowing how and when we should appear as a thought leader and when to be cool.
MANAGEMENT
Managing people and projects is essential. A self-starter who can navigate multiple internal stakeholders and inspire people with their ideas will be just as valuable to us as someone who is a good team leader.
PASSION
We have some ways we want to show-up through campaigns, but we want a partner who is excited about TNM and our mission. Collaborative in spirit, we welcome the candidate to be enthusiastic about what we could achieve together.
Specifically the job will involve
  • Oversee the development and delivery of multiple marketing moments throughout 2023 and beyond
  • Managing a PR programme and agency support, making sure that the right tasks and projects are sitting in the right places
  • Working closely with creator relations and editorial, making sure we are exploiting editorial beyond our own earned media outlet and supporting with paid where appropriate
  • Working with our Events lead, to ensure that we make the most of IRL opps
  • Working closely with digital and sales teams, to ensure we are commercially aligned and complementing what is happening within the business
  • Developing project plans and driving a team to deliver…and leading by example
  • Working closely with our CMO to ensure activity threads through every area of our business - including internal comms and product
  • Ability to constructively challenge and practically create - go beyond the conceptual
Our culture is vital. We are a team and we work together with a generous spirit of collaboration. Being able to listen to each other and think-through ideas is key.

And we have fun along the way, being brave, being kind, being honest and being curious. We are growing 25% month over month, making us the fastest growing news company today.

We are on a journey

TNM has laid the perfect foundation on which to grow its editorial flair and brand activity.
After 23 weeks in beta and two newsrooms built to serve US and UK audiences through the eyes, ears and brilliant minds of journalists with an average of 24, we have been able to hone our signature storytelling for a generation built on social media.
Using Horizontal Storytelling – taking the approach of ‘friends telling friends’ – we have honed a model which creates a new category of news. Now we have the basics right, we need someone special to help us go to the next level. We need to collaborate with the creator community in ways that are imaginative, business savvy and build our brand commercially as well as bolster its reputation as a legitimate player amongst seasoned creators.

What we think we need…

What we THINK we need…?!

That’s right. The thing about creating a new category of news is that there are no precedents for what we’re looking for. As such, we invite you to view this is a ‘first go’ – a basis of a job description which we would co-create and build to become a truly exceptional appointment.

A linchpin of commercial and newsroom activity

Our business is broadly divided into two halves: editorial and commercial. Those who tell the stories and those who find creative ways to bring money in the door, do business differently and innovate on traditional ways of achieving success. We see this role straddling these camps in two distinct ways:
  1. Connecting editorial to relevant creators: being part of the newsroom means being aware of the stories – both daily and longer-term - that journalists are working on and how we might amplify them through creator contact. This might take the form of guest contributors; reposts; appearances in newsroom events and even recruitment
  2. Ensuring TNM Studios deploys relevant voices: as part of our commercial work, we will be talking to many different brands about ways to better communicate with ‘Gen Z’. As such you would be required to attend brand meetings and grow your business acumen by helping develop creative responses that use creators effectively and imaginatively.

A well-networked connector

As well as having experience, we are keen that you come with contacts. This isn’t about buying a ‘black book’ of names and numbers – it’s about knowing how to activate certain sectors and demonstrating your hunger to know more: go to the right events; have good contacts at talent agencies and/or a specialism that you can show us is valuable.

A host for our brand

It is important that you are comfortable on stage/on camera and are open to training for ‘hosting’ events with the careful guidance of your mentor. This also might mean speaking to the press and attending international conferences.

Great experience, but not the finished product

Despite the outline in this description seeming daunting – we are by no means looking for the finished product. We are looking for aptitude and hunger. We are looking for passion, alignment with our vision and, ultimately, someone we like, want to work with and who wants to work with us.

Lines of reporting

There is a strong entrepreneurial element to this role. It’s important that you are free to spread your wings. That said, professional development takes guidance and experience. For this reason, we propose you are mentored by our Chief Creative Officer, Lotte Jones. Lotte sits on the leadership team at The News Movement, and will be able to help direct you, shape you and help you grow in the organization.
Our culture is vital. We are a team, we work together with a generous spirit of collaboration. Being able to listen to each other and think-through ideas. Our audience is at the heart of what we do. We offer an empathetic and supportive environment where every voice matters and we recognise every business needs many different strengths and skills to be successful.
The News Movement is all about doing things differently. To apply, please contact join@thenewsmovement.com with a few words on you, a few words on us and a resume.

We are on a journey
TNM has laid the perfect foundation on which to grow both editorially and mature as a brand. After 25 weeks in beta and two newsrooms built to serve US and UK audiences through the eyes, ears and brilliant minds of journalists with an average age of 24, we have been able to hone our signature storytelling for a generation built on social media.
Using TNM’s unique style of “Horizontal Storytelling” – friends telling friends” the news rather than “professors telling pupils” – we have developed a new category of news. Now we have the foundations in place, we need someone special to help us build to the next level. We need someone with editorial experience, as well as someone comfortable collaborating with the creator community in ways that are imaginative and business savvy. We must also consolidate our reputation as a legitimate player amongst established editorial brands and creative communities.
What we are looking for
Having recently been through an intense design sprint alongside our agency (based in London), we have tightened and improved our consumer-facing visual identity and editorial appearance online, as well as developing a new corporate identity. We have a guide to how we visually behave from both a copy and visual perspective.
With this work completed, we are conscious that we can’t afford to stand still. We are a rapidly growing business with design needs that shift and grow all the time. As well as a capable pair of hands to help guide us from a technical perspective, we also need a brand steward who can pick up the baton from our agency and become a guardian for how we develop.
This role is all about serving our audiences and making our output look and feel amazing. We want every touch point someone has with The News Movement to be engaging and spectacular.
Who are we looking for?
Passion for Design: We are looking for an experienced designer who is happy to get their hands dirty as well as develop a vision for the brand. This would suit someone looking to take their next professional step-up and wants to grow alongside our business, gradually building a team at a rate that can serve all our needs.
Care about our purpose: Ideally you have a keen interest in news, current affairs OR you want to change how it is all done.
A self-starter: This role will not come with a roadmap! We are looking for individuals who can take an entrepreneurial approach to the opportunity and challenge us internally.
Gravitas and chemistry: We are a small team and in order to build influence, having the right chemistry will be important. As such, good examples of consultancy, albeit as part of an agency or as part of a multi-stakeholder organization would be an asset.
 Specifically the job will involve
  • Owning the TNM visual brand strategy and its application across platforms
  • Create and produce graphic design work for the full range of TNM outputs - including corporate brand as well as editorial (and other consumer-facing) assets
  • Work with senior leadership to plan your team and recruit accordingly
  • Working directly with producers, brands and journalists to create multi platform graphics alongside existing designer(s)
  • Liaising with the editorial, commercial and products team to ensure that design work consistently answers the brief in terms of look and feel, accuracy, functionality and brand identity
  • Embracing a learning culture of design and animation software research, usage and improvement/development
  • Keeping up to date with TNM editorial and design standards and guidelines
  • Propelling our brand forward into new spaces and places
  • Translating  briefs into graphic content thanks to your detailed understanding of the requirements of digital media, your graphics production experience and your knowledge of social platforms.
  • Leading creative projects which draw on a variety of specialist design and production expertise. For example directing live action or art directing photography or briefing and supervising CGI animation - as well as IRL events and/or merchandise
  • Prioritizing and planning activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines and resource requirements.
